"The footwear industry isn't gatekept by talent; it's gatekept by technical knowledge and the right portfolio, and both of those are completely learnable."

What you'll learn

What you'll be able to do

  • Sketch and render footwear concepts with correct proportion, perspective, and material representation across categories — sneakers, heels, boots, and performance.
  • Build a complete, factory-ready footwear tech pack including upper pattern basics, construction specs, hardware callouts, and a full size-grading breakdown.
  • Use industry-standard tools — Illustrator, Rhino, and AI generative design platforms — to produce concept boards, colorways, and 3D visualizations.
  • Evaluate last geometry, fit specifications, and sole construction methods well enough to hold a technical conversation with a last maker or factory sample room.
  • Assemble a dual-track portfolio (creative + technical) formatted for real footwear brand hiring reviews, design tests, and Behance/Instagram presentation.
  • Map and execute a targeted job-search strategy across brand design teams, private-label retail operations (Target, Nordstrom, DSW), independent consultancies, and trade-show networks like FN Platform and Micam Milano.

A note from your teacher

Jennifer Xue of StyleCareer.com

If you've been trying to break into footwear design, you already know the problem: the industry doesn't come with a front door.

You can be genuinely talented as a strong sketcher, a fast learner, or someone with a real eye for product, and still have no idea how to produce a tech pack a factory can use, how to evaluate last geometry, what a footwear hiring manager actually wants to see in a portfolio review, or which trade shows and networks are worth your time. Fashion schools give you maybe one elective on shoes. YouTube gives you rendering tutorials. Neither gives you the full professional picture. I built Sole Career Studio because that gap was costing talented people their shot.

What you'll find here is the curriculum I wish had existed when I was coming up, structured the way a senior designer at a brand like Nike or ECCO would actually mentor a junior: technically precise, industrially honest, and completely devoid of the hand-waving that passes for education in this space. We're going to talk about lasts and fit specs and construction methods in enough depth that you can hold a real conversation with a last maker or a factory sample room. We're also going to talk about AI, not as hype, but as the legitimate, already-happening shift in how professional designers work, and you'll use generative design tools to build real deliverables, not just play with novelty.

Here's the core objection I hear: "I don't have the technical background." I'm going to tell you directly, nobody does when they start. Technical knowledge in footwear is learned, not inherited. The designers who succeed are the ones who stop waiting to feel ready and start building the actual artifacts: the sketches, the tech packs, the portfolio, the job-search map. This program gives you the structure to do exactly that, in sequence, with practical exercises at every stage that produce real work you can show.

By the time you finish, you'll have a dual-track portfolio, creative and technical, formatted for the actual hiring processes at brands, private-label retailers, and design studios. You'll understand how to network at FN Platform and Micam Milano. You'll know which entry points exist beyond the mega-brands: the design consultancies, the Target private-label teams, the DSW in-house operations. And you'll know how to ace a design test in an interview, because we cover that too.

The footwear industry is smaller and more navigable than it looks from the outside, once someone who knows it takes the time to draw you a real map. That's what this is. Come in.
